There are four stages of the 2018 Melbourne Violin Competition

STAGE 1: Video Recording Upload to YouTube (COMPLETED)

  • A video recording of any movement from the Six Sonatas and Partitas (BWV1001-1006) by J.S Bach.
  • Before performing, please state to the camera, “Hi, my name is (first name), I’m from (city) and this is my Stage 1 entry for the 2018 Melbourne Violin Competition.” 
  • Please begin performing within 30 seconds of introducing yourself. The introduction and performance must be recorded in one take. 
  • Upload your video recording to YouTube and title the video ‘2018 Melbourne Violin Competition Stage 1 – your full name’. The video can be public or private.
  • Email the link of your video to hi@violincompetition.com.au from your registered email address.
  • Use your full name and city in the subject heading of the email and only include the video link in the email.
  • Video links must be submitted before 11:59pm AEST, 31st March 2018. 
  • The adjudication panel will comprise of Sophie Rowell and Sarah Curro.
  • All entrants will be notified of whether they progress to Stage 2 before the 30th April 2018.

STAGE 2: Video Recording Upload to YouTube (COMPLETED)

  • A video recording of any two movements from the Six Sonatas and Partitas (BWV1001-1006) by J.S Bach.
  • The two movements need not be from the same Sonata or Partita, but they must not have been performed for Stage 1.
  • Before performing, please state to the camera, “Hi, my name is (first name), I’m from (city) and this is my Stage 2 entry for the 2018 Melbourne Violin Competition.”
  • Please begin performing within 30 seconds of introducing yourself. The introduction and two movements must all be recorded in one take. 
  • Upload your video recording to YouTube and title the video ‘2018 Melbourne Violin Competition Stage 2 – your full name’. The video can be public or private.
  • Email the link of your video to hi@violincompetition.com.au from your registered email address.
  • Video links must be submitted before 11:59pm AEST, 30th June 2018. 
  • The adjudication panel will comprise of Sophie Rowell and Sarah Curro.
  • All entrants will be notified of whether they progress to Stage 3 before the 31st July 2018. 

SEMI-FINALS: Live Performance at Melba Hall, University of Melbourne (20/10/18)

  • Saturday 20th October 2018, 10am-4pm

  • Melba Hall, University of Melbourne, Parkville

  • Free admission. No ticketing. No allocated seating.

  • Seven semi-finalists will each perform a complete Solo Violin Sonata or Partita by J.S Bach. 

  • This event will be broadcast by 3MBS FM and live streamed online by 5 Stream.

    10:00am – Dindin Wang, Sonata No.1 (Australia)

    10:30am – Dandan Wang, Partita No.3 (Australia)

    11:05am – Anna Dorothea Mutterer, Partita No.2 (Germany)

    11:50am – Emily Leung, Sonata No.3 (USA)

    12:30pm-1:30pm – LUNCH BREAK

    1:30pm – Christine Bernsted, Partita No.2 (Denmark)

    2:15pm – Edward Walton, Partita No.3 (Australia)

    2:50pm – Liu Zheng, Partita No.2 (China)  

    Adjudication panel: Sarah Curro and Sophie Rowell.

    Audience members may enter and exit between performances but not during performances.

    Audience members must be quiet and mobile devices switched off.

FINALS: Live Performance at Sky Lounge, 318 Russell St, Melbourne (21/10/18)

  • Performance of one complete Sonata or Partita (BWV1001 to 1006) by J.S Bach.
  • Must be the same Sonata or Partita performed for the semi-finals.
  • Finals date: 2pm, 21st October 2018
  • Finals venue: Abode 318 Sky Lounge, Melbourne CBD
  • The winner will receive $5,000 and all other finalists will receive $1,000.

  • Due to limited space, the Finals Concert will not be open to the public. Only guest voters and family members of the finalists will be able to attend.
